National Reading Group Month Event!

"Celebrating the Joy of Shared Reading" this October:

WNBA-SF together with Book Passage hosts a
Literary Luncheon with Celebrated Author
*Joyce Maynard• The Good Daughters
*Thursday, October 14th, 12 Noon*
Joyce Maynard photo by Tehrani

Once again, master storyteller, Joyce Maynard, has delivered a riveting novel of domestic disturbance and fraught family relationships told in her inimitably clear, compelling style. The premise of The Good Daughters is deceptively simple: Two baby girls are born on the same day in 1950 in the same small New Hampshire hospital. But they are born into families that could hardly have been less alike. The echoes and aftershocks of this seemingly random occurrence will resonate through the lives of the girls and their families––in ways both prosaic and profound for decades.
**
The Good Daughters is a chronicle of the unlikely ways the two women’s lives intersect––from childhood and adolescence to first loves, first sex, marriage, and parenthood; from the deaths of parents to divorce, the loss of home, and the loss of a beloved
partner––until an unavoidable moment when a long-held secret from the past alters everything.

*About the Author:** Joyce Maynard has been a reporter for The New York Times, a magazine journalist, radio commentator, and syndicated columnist, as well as the author of six novels and four books of nonfiction. Her bestselling memoir, At Home in the World, has been translated into eleven languages. She lives in Mill Valley, California.

Call Book Passage, Corte Madera (415) 927-0960 ext.1, to reserve. The ticket price of $60 includes an outstanding lunch catered by Insalata’s Restaurant & an autographed copy of Joyce Maynard’s
book.
*
The Women’s National Book Association
launched National Reading Group Month in October of 2007 to celebrate the organization’s ninetieth birthday. This year, WNBA will continue its tradition of promoting women and the book and literacy in general by hosting events in their chapter cities: Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

  From Our Chapter President
Lynn Henriksen

Dear WNBA-SF Friends,

From the reports I have received from members, summer has been a virtual whirlwind, from signing book deals, looking forward to impending publications, playing active roles in festivals, fairs, and writing conferences, to family reunions and vacations to exotic places, and it is not over yet.

Have you wondered what special opportunities exist for authors in this time of upheaval in the book business? You will get answers to this and all kinds of questions about the state of the publishing business from our panel of experts, who have the latest information on what is really going on. See you 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, September 12th at the San Francisco Public Library: Zen and the Art of the Book Deal. Remember you can sell your books at this event as a WNBA-SF member!

Lunch with Joyce Maynard, anyone? I can’t wait! She’s reading from The Good Daughters, hot off the press, for National Reading Group Month on October 14th at Book Passage. The food, catered by Insalata’s Restaurant, “is to die for.”

As always – may each of you be warmed by the incomparable Bay Area sunshine, cooled in her delightful fog, and energized by the remarkable people that make living in this unique spot on the planet a true blessing.

Keeping Spirits Alive,

Lynn Henriksen

WNBA-SF President

We encourage each member to attend Regular Board Meetings, which are generally held the 1st Thursday of each month at the San Francisco Main Public Library from 6-8 pm.

Touching New Novel from WNBA-SF Treasurer, Christopher C. Payne
Chris Payne

Christopher C. Payne embarked on a literary career with his first novel Duncan's Diary: Birth of a Serial Killer. In his newly published second book, Learning to Cry (July 16, 2010), Payne detoured from horror and delved into the complicated ties, deep love and ferocious pain between fathers and daughters.

Between writing two novels, Christopher helped establish a small publishing house, JournalStone, who in turn published his new book, Learning to Cry. Not satisfied with just writing, JournalStone is now actively soliciting author submissions for publication, but Christopher has still found the time to begin his third novel which should be published before the end of 2010.

Having three daughters of his own, Learning to Cry was a very personal endeavor for Christopher, and while the storyline is fictional, it holds strong emotional ties from some of his own experiences.

History

The Women's National Book Association is a national organization promoting the value of books and reading since 1917. WNBA exists as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) to promote literacy and to support the role of women in the community of the book. The San Francisco Chapter of WNBA was founded in 1968 by Effie Lee Morris, then coordinator of Children's Services for the San Francisco Main Public Library.
Membership in the San Francisco Chapter stands at 147. Our members are writers, booksellers, agents, editors, publishers, publicists, librarians, graphic designers, career coaches, marketing specialists, conference planners, aspiring authors and avid readers.

The San Francisco branch of WNBA is one chapter in a vibrant organization with over 800 members across the county. Each branch has its own flavor and lively events to honor books, the creation of books, the world of books, and allied arts.

The Women's National Book Association has been a Non-Governmental Organization member of the United Nations since 1959. An NGO is defined as "any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is organized on a local, national or international level. Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety of services and humanitarian functions, bring citizens' concerns to governments, monitor policies and encourage political participation at the community level."

In effect, WNBA members are to be ambassadors for the UN. Our organization disseminates information about the United Nations through all the means at our disposal, especially through our national and chapter publications and monthly programs.
