One Woman’s Path to Publishing began at Meet-the-Agents 2009:
Mary Jo McConahay’s Maya Roads:
Travels Through Time and Space in the American
Rainforest will be published by Chicago Review Press, Spring
2011. She met her agent, Andy Ross, at our sold-out MTA event
last year, so sign up now to assure your place.
“Last March I joined a hundred other men and women from the
WNBA San Francisco
Chapter at Sinbad’s Restaurant for its annual
Meet the Agents
event. From the windows, views of the Bay were the blue
of dreams, and expansive enough to calm the most nervous.
I won’t say I wasn’t a little jittery as I looked around the
room, at the agents waiting. The hours were so
learning-intensive and fun, and I called an agent I met, to
whom I felt connected, and within a few days we were literary
representative and client… some six months later, I signed the
publisher’s contract.” Click here to read her entire article on
WNBA-SF’s blog. www.maryjomcconahay.com
This year’s Agents, Editors, and Publishers will posted on our
website by mid-February

From Our Chapter
President

Dear WNBA-SF Friends,
Now that we’ve walked a few steps into 2010,
and we’ve been drenched by winter storms (but thankful for the
rain), do we like what we see on the horizon? People I’ve talked to
are energetic and have high hopes for the year; they plan to pursue
the pot-of-gold at the end of the rainbow as the storm clouds make
way for the inevitable blue skies and sunshine we can count
on. I’m with ‘em – this will be a great
year.
Opportunities abound, if we
simply put ourselves ‘out there’ and stay open to the bounty spread
before us. Sappy maybe, but true, nonetheless. After having said
that, I encourage you to become more involved this year with
WNBA-SF. And there are myriad possibilities for doing just that,
ranging from volunteering for a committee, chairing an event that’s
been percolating in your mind, to simply taking part in meetings,
events, and mixers. We welcome your voice, energy, insights,
and expertise. The benefits of your membership in our chapter will
be enriched exponentially by your being
proactive.
Our planning meeting last week was literally rained out, so we
don’t have a complete calendar of events for this issue of
Bookworm, since the meeting was rescheduled for February 4th.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, March 27th for our 7th
annual Meet-the-Agents/Editors/Publisher event. You can read more
about it in this issue. I hope I’ll see some of you before that at
the San Francisco Writers Conference that Michael Larsen and
Elizabeth Pomada are putting on February 12th - 14th and at our
East Bay mixer on Sunday, February 21st – see details in this
issue, as well.
It may seem like a distant
memory, but my usual sign-off will soon make sense – we never have
to wait long to be warmed by the incomparable Bay Area sunshine,
cooled in her delightful fog, and energized by the remarkable
people that make living in this unique spot on the planet a true
blessing.
Keeping Spirits Alive,
Lynn Henriksen
WNBA-SF President
Next board meeting is Thursday,
March 4th, 6-8 pm at the San Francisco Public Library in the
Latino/Hispanic Room A, lower level. Food & beverages are
allowed.

History
The Women's National Book Association is a
national organization promoting the value of
books and reading since 1917. WNBA exists as a
nonprofit 501(c)(3) to promote literacy and to
support the role of women in the community of
the book. The San Francisco Chapter of WNBA was
founded in 1968 by Effie Lee Morris, then
coordinator of Children's Services for the San
Francisco Main Public Library.
Membership in the San Francisco Chapter stands
at 147. Our members are writers, booksellers,
agents, editors, publishers, publicists,
librarians, graphic designers, career coaches,
marketing specialists, conference planners,
aspiring authors and avid readers.
The San Francisco branch of WNBA is one chapter
in a vibrant organization with over 800 members
across the county. Each branch has its own
flavor and lively events to honor books, the
creation of books, the world of books, and
allied arts.
The Women's National Book Association has been
a Non-Governmental Organization member of the
United Nations since 1959. An NGO is defined as
"any non-profit, voluntary citizens' group
which is organized on a local, national or
international level. Task-oriented and driven
by people with a common interest, NGOs perform
a variety of services and humanitarian
functions, bring citizens' concerns to
governments, monitor policies and encourage
political participation at the community
level."
In effect, WNBA members are to be ambassadors
for the UN. Our organization disseminates
information about the United Nations through
all the means at our disposal, especially
through our national and chapter publications
and monthly programs.
