ROSEMARY DANIELL FOUNDED ZONA
ROSA® over twenty-six years ago
when she invited four women to meet once a
month to talk about writing and life at her
little apartment in Savannah,
Georgia. Today, thousands of women,
and some men, have participated in Zona
Rosa workshops; Rosemary leads Zona Rosa
workshops and retreats all over the
country, as well as in Europe, where they
are dubbed “Pajama Parties for Grown-Up
Girls with Smarts”© (though the occasional
man been known to crash these, too!).
To date, over 60 Zona Rosans and counting
have become published and/or award-winning
authors, and others have achieved their
potential in other fields. Among the
authors are Cassandra King, author of THOSE
SAME SWEET GIRLS, and other popular
mainstream novels; John Berendt, who was
part the Savannah Zona Rosa group while
writing his multi-best-seller, MIDNIGHT IN
THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL; Best-selling
New York Times author Bruce Feiler, who
consulted with Rosemary before publishing
his first book, LEARNING TO BOW; and Eric
Haney, who took part in the Atlanta Zona
Rosa group while writing INSIDE DELTA
FORCE, which became the basis for the
television series, “The Unit.”

annually since 1983 to bookstores that excel in
contributing to their communities in ways that bring
books and young people together. The 50-year-old
bookstore closed for a month in 2005, but a combination
of community support and revitalized in-store strategies
brought the business back to life. Refreshments will be
served on the red carpet in the newly renovated Kids
Korner and members of the Kepler’s staff will be on hand
to discuss the world of words with WNBA-SF members and

Nov. TBA WNBA Award Ceremony honoring
Kathi Kamen Goldmark Nov 8th
This year’s WNBA Award winner is San Francisco
resident Kathi Kamen Goldmark. Goldmark, a singer and
musician who was working part time as a media escort in
Los Angeles, driving authors around on their book tours,
came up with the idea of putting together a literary band
to give a benefit concert at a Los Angeles book fair in
1992. The band, known as The Rock Bottom Remainders,
includes some of today’s most popular authors such as Amy
Tan, Dave Barry, and Stephen King. The WNBA Award is
presented by the members of the Women's National Book
Association to "a living American woman who derives part
or all of her income from books and allied arts, and who
has done meritorious work in the world of books beyond
the duties or responsibilities of her profession or
occupation." The award was formerly known as the
Constance Lindsay Skinner Award. Its namesake was a
playwright, critic, editor, and author active from early
in the 20th century until her death in 1939. Eleanor
Roosevelt, Pearl Buck, Barbara Bush, Patricia Schroeder,
Nancy Pearl, Perri Klass and our own Effie Lee Morris
have all received this distinguished award. WNBA-SF will
have the honor of planning the reception for this year’s
winner here in San Francisco.
Nov. 14-16 WNBA-SF at California
Library Assn Conference in San Jose
WNBA-SF will have a booth at the California
Library Assn Conference in San Jose to share information
about our organization with the library association and
to continue the literary legacy of our founding
president, Ms. Effie Lee Morris. In March 2008 Ms. Morris
received ALA's highest honor of honorary membership in
the American Library Association in recognition for her vision, advocacy and
legacy to children’s services in public
libraries. This distinction is conferred in recognition
of outstanding contributions of lasting importance to
libraries and librarianship.

Seeking meeting space…
Do you know a terrific restaurant in San
Francisco? Or, maybe an art gallery? A community room?
We’re looking for a venue to hold a dinner meeting, or
Saturday morning event - do you have any suggestions. We
need a room that would hold 75-100 people, on public
transportation, and preferably with parking near by.
Please contact Mary at president@wnba-sfchapter.org

History
The Woman's National Book Association is a national
organization of women and men who work with and
value books. WNBA exists to promote reading and to
support the role of women in the community of the
book. The San Francisco Chapter of WNBA was founded
in 1968 by Effie Lee Morris, then coordinator of
Children's Services for the San Francisco Main
Public Library.
Membership has ranged from sixty to one hundred.
Our members are writers, booksellers, agents,
editors, publishers, publicists, librarians,
graphic designers, career coaches, marketing
specialists, conference planners, aspiring authors
and avid readers.
The San Francisco branch of WNBA is one chapter in
a vibrant organization with over 800 members across
the county. Each branch has its own flavor and
lively events to honor books, the creation of
books, the world of books, and allied arts.
The Women's National Book Association has been a
Non-Governmental Organization member of the United
Nations since 1959. An NGO is defined as "any
non-profit, voluntary citizens' group which is
organized on a local, national or international
level. Task-oriented and driven by people with a
common interest, NGOs perform a variety of services
and humanitarian functions, bring citizens'
concerns to governments, monitor policies and
encourage political participation at the community
level."
In effect, WNBA members are to be ambassadors for
the UN. Our organization disseminates information
about the United Nations through all the means at
our disposal, especially through our national and
chapter publications and monthly programs.

From Our Chapter
President
Dear WNBA-SF
Friends,
Summer has come to the Coastside and I spent a glorious afternoon
in the warm sun because I know tomorrow the fog will be back. I
hope you are able to enjoy a break from your routine as well. Our
40th Anniversary Gala was a wonderful experience and now it is on
to planning this year’s events. We have a fantastic line up of
opportunities for writers and readers to gather and support each
other in the coming months. Becoming a part of the board is a
wonderful way to meet people and learn about the organization.
Please feel free to contact anyone on the current board to discuss
board responsibilities. We are available to mentor and support
anyone who is interested in a board position. Of course sharing a
position is also an option, and volunteering for a specific event
is appropriate as well. Please consider becoming a part of our team
of dynamic women who know how to work hard, but also have a great
deal of fun in the process.
Be
well,
Mary

From our Literacy

Friends,
We want to cast a huge net for
your "promoting literacy" efforts.
Questions:
• Which library do you frequent, who is their "outreach"
person, and what is his/her contact info?
• Who's your favorite bookseller and what's their
website URL?
• What other organizations do you volunteer for?
Our goal is to create a resource list so that WNBA members can
support
each other while we support your passion to promote literacy.

Author of
Mirror of My
Soul
Greetings!
I feel privileged to be a new member of WNBA SF. I am so
looking forward to being active in contributing whatever I can to
the growth of the chapter. I am honored to be asked to send
this poem for the newsletter.
This poem titled "Mirror Of My Soul" is from my new book of true
love stories in poetic form under the same title; "Mirror Of My
Soul" the poetry of Glenda Gwynn Ewing. I am currently
polishing the manuscript for my new book of true short
stories. I have a new website in progress!! The web
address is: ggbliss.com, and ggbliss.net. For
information regarding my book, contact me:
ggblisspublishingkv@yahoo.com
I am truly excited about attending the Book Expo America event in
LA from May 29-June 1, 2008. This is the biggest expo in the
nation where authors, publishers, bookstore sellers from all over
the world will be netwoking their latest wares. I am an
attendee that hopes to see some familiar faces from the Bay Area
there!
Peace and Blessings!
Glenda
"Mirror Of My
Soul"
I love you from the depth of my heart
I truly long for you when we’re
Apart
I wonder when we kiss, and touch
And feel
If what you feel, is what I feel
And is it real
I’d like to know when you look
Into my eyes
If you see the same glisten as
The stars in the sky
I wonder when you’re making love
With me
If you’re giving your all
You can be
In the beginning
Right from the start
I was so afraid to open my heart
But you looked into my eyes
And entered the…
Mirror of my soul
Shared your heart and desires
Which have once again
Made me whole
When we are together
Everything feels so-oo right
I want to be the rays of sunshine
That makes even rainy days bright
Since I met you
I’ve found Love
Joy, adventure, and sheer delight
Now, I know you are happiness
My silver moon on any beautiful
Starlit
night

that complex world.

stories entitled "When Mother Died."
Below please find submission guidelines. If
you would prefer to receive this as an attachment
please send email to

If you are submitting work, please send email
indicating your desire to participate in this
project to SellinghamPublishing@yahoo.com.
This helps us to prepare our editorial staff with
regard to the quantity of work anticipated.
Submissions will only be accepted until July 31,
2008. It is the editor's belief that
submissions challenged by an urgency due to limited
time constraints convey an authenticity and edge to
the work that contributes to an enhanced quality
that lengthy deadline options can otherwise
compromise.
Submissions must be non-fiction and can be in the
form of poetry, eulogy or memoir.
